  a heart for hurst

Anita has a "Heart for Hurst" because she has lived in Hurst for 49 years.  She is thankful for the outstanding city services and quality amenities provided by the Hurst city government. A life-changing event,  Anita was hired by the City of Hurst in 1980 in Finance and was promoted to Director of Finance for the last 20 years of her twenty-nine year tenure.  Before retiring in 2010, she directed financial operations for the City highlighted by stable property tax rates, conservative investment of city funds and award winning annual budgets.

Upon her retirement,  Anita stayed involved in city government and in community organizations.  She maintains her certification as a  Certified Government Finance Officer and as a Registered Tax Assessor Collector for the State of Texas.  She continues to serve as a Budget Reviewer for the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States & Canada (GFOA) in the Distinguished Budget Award program.  As a community volunteer,  Anita is the treasurer for the Hurst Euless Bedford Rotary after serving In all other offices including President. She is co-treasurer of the North East Tarrant County Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).   A fifth generation Texan, she also serves as treasurer of the local Isaac Low Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

Anita maintains that continuing education is the key for success in a chosen profession.  Tarrant County Junior College was readily available in Hurst to provide her with an Associate of Arts Degree with highest honors in time to apply for the accountant's position available at the City of Hurst in 1980.  While working full-time and taking evening classes at the University of North Texas, she worked to graduate in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Finance cum laude in time to apply for the Director of Finance position at the City of Hurst.  Then after retiring, she earned her Master of Arts Degree in Christian Education in 2010 at Dallas Baptist University (DBU) in timeto become the first Children's Minister at Colonial Hills Baptist Church in Cedar Hill.  Anita and other faithful members of this church established an Endowment Fund at  DBU in memory of Colonial Hills after the church dissolved in 2014.  Today, she encourages the former children of the church to visit and apply for scholarships at DBU during their last year of high school.  She is grateful that the City of Hurst is accessible to Dallas County  because she was  her Mother's primary caregiver in Dallas beginning in 2002 while working and keeping a home in Hurst.  She drove her Mother to her church, Colonial Hills, during the last years of her life.  Anita became involved during that time as Church Treasurer, Finance Chair, Sunday School Children's Director, Awana  leader,. and as a staff member for two years as Children's Minister. All that time she worked in Hurst during the day. Now she is back in Hurst in time  to run for a City Council Office. She has long admired the dedication and self sacrifice of the Hurst  City Council and would like to serve as part of Hurst's decision-making leadership body for the citizens.  With the help of Hurst citizens, her goal is to assist Hurst in becoming greater than it is today so future generations can live and enjoy this "Quality of Life" City.  She feels her dependability and responsiveness will benefit the Office of the Mayor of Hurst.
